The Mina, the merrier?

On July 9th, the biggest culinary gamble in San Francisco will roll the dice when Restaurant Michael Mina opens its doors at the Westin St. Francis on Union Square.
The hotel’s old restaurant and lobby are undergoing a US$4.5million renovation overseen by designer Barbara Barry, and the menu will feature such food jewels as kobe beef with truffle creamed spinach and lemon scallop ceviche in lemon vinaigrette with lemon segment, caviar and chive.
Everything about the restaurant will be under intense scrutiny by the insatiable San Francisco foody community, and it remains to be seen whether another astronomically-priced downtown restaurant–even one manned by a chef of Mina’s renown–can survive.
