Smoke-free Italy

Restaurants and bars in Italy are giving smoking the boot starting January 10th. Owners who don’t police the ban will be subject to a $3,000 fine.
Italians — even smoking Italians (and there are a lot of them) — seem in favor of the new law… for now. Most cite it as a way to quit, and only a slim minority think it’s wrong.
Likely to be the most effected are the country’s youth. Drinking and alcohol are not a problem there, apparently, and most places will serve the underaged without question. But if you’re Italian and young and beautiful, the thing to do is sit around and nurse soft drinks while you puff on cartons of cigarettes all day long.
