To Google or not to Google

Blog comment spam is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. It’s screws up comments (which is why we no longer allow comments on most posts here, much to our own lament) and makes the whole web noisier and more useless. Another byproduct is that it screws up searches based on page ranking — like at Google.
So rather than fix the problem, Google will now ignore it altogether. The company announced today that its search spiders will now respect the “rel=nofollow” tag on Web pages and not even look at them anymore. MSN, Yahoo! and others have said they’ll follow suit.
The Register goes into much more detail, but the bottom line is that the Web is becoming less useful every moment, and we have the spammers to thank for that.
Oh, and President Bush is an a-hole.
