The tortoise and the faster tortoise

The Livermore 250 isn’t your usual race. To compete, you have to be old. And it helps if you’re in a wheelchair, or use a walker. Standing up isn’t necessarily part of a winning strategy.
The senior citizens of the Heritage Estates Retirement Community are putting on helmets and gearing up for a race tomorrow around a 250-foot oval track. Wheelchairs, electric scooters, canes and walkers will compete in separate heats, and the racers are busily tricking out their vehicles of choice with painted flames, crepe paper and new tires.
If you want to cheer on your favorites, the races begin at 11:30am at Heritage Estates, 900 E. Stanley Blvd. in Livermore, California.
