The War on Culture

In case you were wondering, you can forget the terms “activist judges” and “culture of life.” The next talking point soundbite phrase is “culture war.”
This culture war we’re all apparently engaged in encompasses both the activist judges and the culture of life, but it goes a bit farther and suggests that anyone who is not deeply Christian and out there voting for Jesus is, in fact, an atheist heathen anti-religious pro-death abortionist Communist who wants to destroy America and American Values (as defined by the religious right) in favor of a nation of gay-marrying devil-worshiping baby killers.
The central turning point on which the entire war is being fought is the filibuster fight, or the Nuclear (or, I guess if you’re a Bush fan, Nucular) Option being bandied about by our elected leaders in Washington. The Republicans want to change the way the Senate works so that no one can filibuster and therefore delay or cancel a vote where there is a clear majority but that the minority feels is detrimental to such an extent that they do not wish to allow the vote to take place.
How is the religious right positioning their argument? Like this: “Janice Rogers Brown understands the great culture war raging in America. That is why the abortion crowd, the homosexual rights movement and the radical secularists are all demanding that Senate liberals block her confirmation.” That’s American Values president Gary Bauer.
Said Brown: “These are perilous times for people of faith, not in the sense that we are going to lose our lives, but in the sense that it will cost you something if you are a person of faith who stands up for what you believe in and say those things out loud.”
I suggest we all have the right to stand up for what we believe in, including a woman’s right to choose, homosexual rights and the right to not worship any religion at all.
