I didn’t say “Miu Miu, I said Meow Meow”

There's no easy way to say goodbye to a cherished pet, and if you follow the fasion advice of Tinkebell, you never have to. This is one way to keep the memory of all the cat hair you lint rolled off your favorite sweater alive. Not for the squeamish (which really means I shouldn't have looked at this either.) How to make your cat into a handbag. ...

Knitted brow

What kind of country do we live in? One where, apparently, you cannot show a crocheted crotch. At least that's what artist Ming-Yi Sung discovered soon after a gallery in Washington put her pieces on display as part of a show called "Not the Knitting You Know." The gallery happens to be located in the lobby of a building occupied by the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. On the morning the exhibit opened, the firm's management demanded that the work, depicting lifesize human forms in all our naked glory, be removed as it was offensive. Instead, Ms. Sung crocheted several...

You know you've always wanted to own K.I.T.T. You know you have! Admitting it is the first step. The second step is actually owning it. The Barris Motor Car Collection is going up for auction on May 14th, and among the varied and famous one-of-a-kind movie and TV star accessories up for bid is the customized 1958 Plymouth Fury that played Stephen King's Christine, Starsky and Hutch's 1975 Ford Gran Torino, "The General Lee," the original Batcycle, "Greased Lightning" from Grease, Back to the Future's DeLorian, autos from The Beverly Hillbillies, The Munsters and Green Hornet and the forementioned Knight Industries...

Big salty virgin

Salty freeway run-off has rarely been as worshipped as the lucky patch of concrete under the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. Hundreds of people with nothing better to pay homage to are flocking to the no-parking area to see what they believe is a vision of the Virgin Mary seeping from a crack in the freeway. You can have your Tortilla Jesus, your Chapati Christ or even grab a gander at a two-for-one when condensation on a window shows the world Mary holding her infant and they're both literally all wet. But how can you compare any of those miracles with a...

World’s best bachelor dinner

Maybe it's just me, but the dishes available at the current "best restaurant in the world," The Fat Duck in Berkshire, England, sounds like stuff I am occasionally forced to make from the remnants in my refrigerator. I mean, sardine on toast sorbet? Bacon and egg ice cream? Why not cottage cheese and ketchup Eggos drizzled with mayo-mustard sauce? Wilted romaine lettuce salad with canned beets and shaved ice flavored with freezer burn and exploded Dr. Pepper? Last year's winner, The French Laundry, fell to number three after 2002 champ Spain's El Bulli restaurant, where one can dine on chef Ferran Adrià's...

The Gates come down

The Gates, beloved by every single person on the planet unless you are evil and have no soul, are being evicted from Central Park today. The take-down process is expected to go quickly. "The aluminum is going to become cans of soda," Jeanne-Claude says—and the fabric will be shredded and turned into carpet padding. Then all that will be left of "The Gates" will be the memories, and the T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, watches and baseball caps. Portions of The Gates will also be donated to well-meaning organizations that share in Christo's vision of uplifting the human spirit. ...

When I hear the word ‘art’ I pull out my checkbook

...or log in to eBay. Well, I certainly take back all the bitching I did about The Gates. In fact, I might have to go ahead and get myself a swatch. The piece is not only moving; it's apparently moving very well. ...
